Ayurvedic treatment for obesity

Obesity or being overweight leads to many challenging comorbidities. Therefore, early proper weight management is considered vital that can ensure that the body will not gain weight pounds post-treatment. At Vaidya Healthcare, the prime objective of the treatment is to ensure no recurrence of weight gain again if the same specific dietary regimen is followed for the lifetime. Our Ayurvedic practitioners make the patients undergo steam baths, Panchakarma therapy, and varied Yoga exercises to treat the patient within a short time span from 21 to 28 days. Along with external or internal purgation therapy, some oral herbal formulations are prescribed for ultimate weight loss.

Obesity or being overweight is a condition characterized by excessive storage of fat in the body. When the bodys calorie intake exceeds the amount of calories burned, it leads to the storage of excess calories in the form of body fat. Increased body fat puts a person at risk for many critical conditions such as heart disease, liver damage, diabetes, arthritis and kidney problems.

Causes of obesity

  • Increased body fat
  • Breathlessness on exertion
  • Lethargy
  • Fatigue
  • Excessive sweating with bad odor

Ayurvedic treatment for obesity

In Ayurveda, obesity is known as Medarog, which is caused by the aggravation of Kapha. Kapha is an Ayurvedic humor which is dense, heavy, slow, sticky, wet and cold in nature. It governs all structure and lubrication in the mind and body apart from controlling weight and formation of all the seven tissues – nutritive fluids, blood, fat, muscles, bones, marrow and reproductive tissues.

In a balanced state, Kapha gives nourishment to these tissues through various micro channels. However, when it is aggravated, Kapha leads to production of toxins in the body. These toxins are heavy and dense in nature and accumulate in weaker channels of the body, causing their blockage. In the case of an obese person, toxins accumulate in Medovahi Srotas (fat channels), thereby leading to an increase in the production of fat tissue (Meda Dhatu). When the body produces more fat tissues, it causes an increase in weight.

The Ayurvedic line of treatment for obesity begins with the pacification of Kapha Dosha. This can be done by eliminating Kapha-aggravating foods from the diet. Next, the treatment also focuses on cleansing of the Medovahi channels through cleansing herbs so that excess weight can be reduced. Lots of foreigners and tourists coming every year for ayurvedic treatment for obesity in Kerala.

FAQ

What are the Ayurvedic classifications of body types related to obesity?

Ayurveda sees our bodies as falling into three main types—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. If you’ve ever felt like you’re prone to holding onto weight or feeling sluggish, that’s Kapha at work. It’s not a bad thing—it’s just about finding balance. Once you understand your type, the right approach becomes clearer.

How does Ayurveda approach weight loss differently from modern medicine?

Think of Ayurveda as a lifestyle reset rather than a crash course. Instead of focusing on calorie counts, it looks at your digestion, energy, and stress levels. Why are you gaining weight? Is it because of poor gut health or stress eating? Ayurveda gently helps you reset your habits with personalized treatments, herbs, and routines. It’s about working with your body, not against it.

What dietary guidelines does Ayurveda recommend for weight management?

The first rule? Keep it simple. Warm soups, lightly spiced veggies, and whole grains are staples. Ayurveda also encourages mindful eating—like actually sitting down and enjoying your food instead of rushing through meals. Avoid cold or overly processed foods since they can “slow down the fire” of digestion. Oh, and sipping warm water throughout the day? Game changer.

Are there specific herbs in Ayurveda that promote weight loss?

Yes, and these herbs have been trusted for generations. Take Triphala, for example—it’s like a digestive reset. Guggulu? It’s known for naturally breaking down fat. Then there’s Vrikshamla (Garcinia Cambogia), which can help curb cravings. These herbs don’t just work on the surface; they help support deeper changes in your body.

How does Panchakarma therapy aid in detoxification and weight loss?

Imagine hitting the refresh button on your body. Panchakarma is all about deep cleansing—removing toxins that slow you down and making your metabolism work better. Treatments like Udvartana (herbal scrubs) not only feel amazing but also target stubborn fat. Many people say they feel lighter and more energized, not just physically but mentally too.
