The hairs normal growth cycle lasts for 2 to 6 years and each hair approximately grows one centimeter (less than half an inch) each month during this phase. About 90% of the hair on the scalp is growing at any one time. About 10% of the hair on scalp, at any one time, is in its resting phase. The resting hair falls out after 2 to 3 months, and the new hair starts to grow in its place.

It is normal to shed few hairs each day as part of the cycle. Nevertheless, some may experience excessive hair loss. It can affect women, men, or children. As the age goes, people tend to lose their hair thickness and amount. Ayurveda treatment for hair loss
In Ayurveda, it is termed as khalitya if there is increased hair fall. It is classified under shiroroga. Romakupagata/keshamulagata vitiated pitta (bhrajaka pitta) beside with vitiated vata leads to withering of the hairs from their roots. Additional to this, vitiated sleshma / kapha with rakta would cover and cause obstruction to the hair root, resulting in no further hair growth from that particular place.
Khalitya is mainly a Pitta predominant tridoshajanya vyadhi which is all three doshas vitiated disease. Depending on the predominance of dosha, it is divided into following types.
- Vataja Khalitya : In this type, scalp (Keshbhoomi) appears as if it is Agnidagdha and it becomes Aruna and Shyava.
- Pittaja Khalitya : Here, the colour of scalp looks as Peeta, Neela and Harita. The scalp is enclosed by the Siras (veins). Scalp may have sweat all over.
- Kaphaja Khalitya : Here, the scalp colour is more or less of same color but here it is Ghana and Snigdha in appearance and the colour inclines towards whitish tinge.
- Sannipataja or Tridoshaja Khalitya : In this type of Khalitya, all the three Doshas characteristics are observed. The scalp looks like burnt and it will have nail like appearance.

FAQ
What causes hair fall, and is it normal to lose hair daily?
Losing hair—it’s stressful, isn’t it? Most of us shed around 50 to 100 hairs daily, which is pretty normal. But if it feels like more—clumps in your brush or thinning spots—that’s when it’s time to pay attention. Could be stress, maybe a poor diet, or hormonal changes. Sometimes, it’s just seasonal, but other times, your body might be trying to tell you something.
How does Ayurveda treat hair fall?
Ayurveda? It’s all about balance. Hair fall isn’t just a scalp problem—it’s tied to digestion, stress, or even your Doshas being out of sync. Treatments usually include herbal oils like Bhringraj to nourish your scalp and herbs like Amla to support healthier roots. It’s not about quick fixes; it’s more of a steady journey back to balance.
Can Ayurveda regrow lost hair?
Regrowing hair is tricky—it takes patience. Ayurveda helps by improving scalp health and stimulating hair follicles with massages and herbs. It’s not a magic wand, but if you stick with it, you might see baby hairs popping up over time.
What lifestyle changes does Ayurveda recommend to reduce hair fall?
Start small. Stress is a big trigger, so things like yoga, meditation, or even just taking breaks can help. Diet matters too—foods like spinach, almonds, or even lentils are great for hair health. Oh, and water! Staying hydrated makes a bigger difference than people realize.
How long does it take for Ayurvedic treatments to show results for hair fall?
Depends on the person. Some notice less hair fall in a few weeks, while regrowth can take months. It’s slow, sure, but Ayurveda focuses on long-term results—not just a quick patch-up.
