Lumbar Spondylosis

Rajan (name changed) has been suffering from back pain since his thirties. “My back used to ache from time to time, but I never paid much attention to it. I usually apply some pain reliever, use a hot water bag, and rest for 2-3 days before returning to my normal self,” Rajan says. However, as he approached his fifties, Rajan noticed that the frequency of his back pain was increasing and that it was taking him much longer to recover after each episode. “I was also experiencing leg weakness and very intense and consistent pain radiating to my legs,” he says.

After a visit to the doctor who ordered an X-Ray and MRI, Rajan was told that he was suffering from lumbar spondylosis due to wear and tear in his spinal cord. He was asked to wear a lumbar-sacral belt and to be under complete bed rest. Though the lumbar belt was providing him pain relief, it seemed temporary. He decided to go for Ayurvedic treatment, in the hope of finding a more permanent solution for his lumbar spondylosis.
Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Kiran B Nair, CEO of Vaidya Healthcare in Perumbavoor, Kerala, has dealt with numerous cases of lumbar spondylosis. As an Ayurvedic Neurologist, he is well-versed in the various causes and symptoms of lumbar spondylosis. Lumbar spondylosis is one of the conditions that fall under the term spondylosis. Other forms include cervical spondylosis and thoracic spondylosis. Dr. Kiran explains that this classification is based on which region of the spinal cord is affected by inflammatory changes.

Ayurveda Panchakarma treatments
such as Kashaya Vasthi, Dhara, Kizhi, and others are used in conjunction with yoga, meditation, physiotherapy, and modern methods such as ultrasound therapy at Vaidya Healthcare. “We believe that the physical and mental aspects of the patient must be treated as a whole, while also taking his personality and future needs into account,” Dr. Kiran says. This holistic approach ensures that each patient’s lumbar spondylosis treatment at Vaidya Healthcare is tailored to their specific needs.
Rajan received intensive therapy in-house at Vaidya Healthcare for two weeks. “I couldn’t believe the transformations I saw in myself after Panchakarma therapy. My pain had significantly decreased, the unbearable sciatica pain was barely noticeable and it was liberating not to have to wear the lumbar belt anymore,” Rajan exclaims.

The Panchakarma Ayurvedic treatment aims to relieve pain by reducing inflammation in the lumbar region. Yoga helps to relax the mind, while physiotherapy and ultrasound therapy help to relax the paraspinal muscles in the lumbar region. “There is a common misconception that people with lumbar spondylosis must be completely bedridden and should not engage in any physical activity. Though some activities must be avoided, we believe that controlled activities such as stretching, yoga, and other activities that strengthen the paraspinal muscles aid in faster recovery,” Dr. Kiran says. Rajan is back home, enjoying life to the fullest. “I am always aware of my limitations and avoid strenuous activities that involve bending forward or lifting heavy objects. However, I am relatively pain-free and able to walk and do my daily activities without any problem,” says Rajan.
Lumbar spondylosis is one of the most common reasons for back pain and Vaidya Healthcare offers a non-surgical, wholesome treatment that combines the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda with the latest advances in modern science.
